Late Middle Ages
Middle East, Dark?
The time period in the Middle Ages was not as dark as it seemed. Many progresses were being made at that time by the Muslims. An example is the development of algebra, trigonometry, and “zero”. They also made huge strides in Medicine and Agriculture. They brought drinkable water into the city and improved yields on new crops. The Muslims were great engineers; they built great mosques in a year. The scholars were able to translate manuscripts of the Greek Philosophers, and developed new philosophy and poetry. The Human Mind Archetypal Analysis
During the next Six Weeks, our AP English class will be applying a psychological approach to movies, stories, and tales, called "Archetypal Analysis." To do this, we will be looking for symbols and details in those works that might have changed or passed on from culture and time.
In order to understand the archetypes, one must understand the theories of Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. The collective unconscious and conscious must be fully understood.

Archetypes of the Quest in Fast and the Furious 6
by Marisol Dominic Toretto was a wanted criminal. He and his team, in the previous movie, stole a good amount of money from a wealthy criminal. In Fast and the Furious 6, Hobbs, the herald, asks Dom to help him catch a criminal named Ian Shaw because the community was threatened. Dom is considered the hero because he accepts the call. Ian Shaw is the devil figure in this film. He and his crew committed many crimes.
Hobbs tells Dom that his former lover, Letty, is involved with Shaw. At first, he refuses the call because doubts that Letty is in fact alive. Although he doesn't know if she is alive, he takes his chances and accepts the call; this is also the threshold of departure. He gathers his loyal companions, Han, Giselle, Tej, Roman, and Brian. They accompany Dom so that they can capture Shaw and recover Letty. Like all heroes, Dom experiences the death of his old self. As a criminal, he chooses to leave his old life, and help the police bring justice. When he sees Letty and realizes that she is indeed alive, he strives to get her back. This is also called the center of abyss. Ian Shaw, obtains a very powerful chip, the boon. For that reason, Hobbs needs to capture Shaw. Letty, as Shaw's minion, realizes that she belongs with Dom and his "family". She turns away from Shaw and reunites with her people. She is what we call the evil figure that is ultimately good. Dom is able to master the two worlds because he was once a criminal and now he brought justice to the community. He mastered both components. Mia, Dom's sister and Brian's wife, gets kidnapped by Shaw. She was what we call the damsel in distress. Riley, Hobbs' FBI partner, was also the trickster and minion. She betrayed them because she was in it with Shaw the whole. Dom and his team save the community because they catch Shaw, and retrieve the chip. Every time they succeed in a task, Dom has a cook out; almost like a ritual. During this cook out, Hobbs informs them that they have been freed. Before eating, they pray to their supernatural aid, God. Dom becomes a mentor for everyone in his crew but more for Brian, and his nephew Jack. |
